What should SEN learning environments look and feel like?
Nasen stress how important the physical environment is to SEN pupils particularly for those with sensory sensitivities.
We are passionate about creating inclusive, homely, calming spaces that enable all students to access a full and meaningful education.
Everyone Deserves the Opportunity to Access an Education
At Strategic Land, we are dedicated to creating inclusive and adaptable learning environments for children with special educational needs (SEN). We understand that many children face challenges in traditional school settings, and we aim to provide spaces that foster a sense of safety, support, and engagement. By thoughtfully designing spaces with flexible layouts, calming elements, and sensory-friendly features, we aim to create environments that support every child in reaching their full potential.
We also recognise the importance of biophilic design, which connects children with nature, enhancing their well-being and helping to reduce stress. Incorporating natural elements like greenery, natural light, and organic textures into learning spaces can help children feel more grounded and focused. In addition, we understand the critical role that good acoustics and warm neutral colours play in creating a calm and welcoming environment. Soft, non-distracting acoustics and soothing colour schemes significantly reduce anxiety and improve concentration for SEN pupils.
Our approach draws inspiration from the latest trends in hybrid learning and post-pandemic design. Adapting spaces to include quiet, flexible areas provides a retreat from the sensory overload of traditional classrooms. This flexibility enables pupils to access their education in a hybrid way, with personalised learning approaches and the integration of assistive technologies. By accommodating a range of learning styles and needs, we create environments where pupils can engage with their education in ways that best support their individual strengths, helping them to thrive and succeed.
