Shirley Library

We were appointed to fit-out of an empty retail unit to form a new home for Shirley Library. The new flagship library features a children’s library, meet and greet, self service pods, meeting facilities, IT stations, and Solihull Connect Pods. We worked in partnership with local college students who produced the artwork installations.

Our Brief

Design a modern, new flagship library for Shirley, as described in the Library Strategy- ‘ a vibrant , flexible space offering integrated and collocated services; modern and accessible to everyone; not just a repository of books but a knowledge bank’.

Focus on the traditional and the new to attract both existing library users and new audiences. It needs to have a ‘wow’ factor and as an integrated community resource offering the Connect local service under one roof. It will showcase a new model of delivery for Solihull residents.

The theme is a ‘journey of learning and discovery’ showcasing innovative new services and enabling and supporting learning, reading, and digital experiences for people of all ages.

It will have a strong local brand that residents can be proud of. The design will incorporate elements of Shirley that people know and love.

It will be a busy, vibrant, and flexible space, in constant use. Study space, award winning children’s area, IT/ learning space, space to relax and unwind – a community resource!

It will attract young mums and children, families, workers, budding business entrepreneurs, people seeking advice, guidance and support, students, retired people seeking a new pastime, people wanting to engage and learn about new technology and the digital offers, people who by chance pop in on a shopping trip to see what is on offer.

The interior space will be clearly defined and zoned. The customers journey through the space will be guided by signage, lighting, colour and tactile finishes. The spaces will be carefully designed so they are fully DDA compliant enabling those with disabilities to navigate through the space with ease. The aim of this fit-out project is create an inviting and welcoming space that people want to come back to time and time again.

The Scheme Design

The final design proposal was worked up in partnership with a range of stakeholders including local Councillor, library staff and senior managers.

Following a series of workshops the layout was frozen and we began to develop the detailed design. The unit was handed to SMBC as a shell for us to fit out.

The interior design scheme was designed to be bright and welcoming. The concept for the interior was based around “residential Shirley” with features such as cloud shaped ceiling rafts, fun curvy road shapes in the flooring and a tree in the centre of the children’s library.

We were fortunate to have been able to partner up with some very talented students at Solihull Sixth form college who designed the graphics and sculptures within the library.

The library has been a huge success and is more popular than ever with local residents.
