Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a slight misnomer and because of this misunderstood. It would be better to call it Building Information Management, luckily you can still call it BIM in some circles this is referred to as BIMM (Building Information Modelling Management).

You can have all the clever construction industry software there is available but his does not constitute BIM, BIM is a centrally located and validated data store feeding a fully collaborative process ensuring, better informed decisions, de-risking, and ultimately a better quality end product. This is the ‘Single source of truth’.

SMBC’s Building Design Studio uses a web based Common Data Environment (CDE) to centrally store the data; this is accessible from any device that has web access via Wi-Fi or any mobile telecommunication network. This underpins the BIM process.

We use the PAS:1192 framework for BIM and use various software packages to realise our goals. If our clients are willing to invest in BIM we are equipped to deliver their needs.

Constructing a model of the building with all of its components helps to identify clashes and helps the client to visualise the end product

We have invested in 3D laser technology to better record existing buildings and sites to aid the construction process
